Carrying over seven million passengers each year, the Auckland rail network is an efficient and increasingly popular way for people to quickly travel around the region.

Auckland’s rail system extends from Pukekohe in the south and from Waitakere in the west to the Auckland CBD (Britomart Transport Centre).  Services are divided into three groups – Western Line (Britomart to Waitakere), Southern Line (Pukekohe to Britomart via Ellerslie and Newmarket) and the Eastern Line (Pukekohe to Britomart via Sylvia Park and Glen Innes).

ARTA is responsible for the planning and development of train services, stations and trains. It works with ONTRACK (which owns, maintains and controls the rail tracks) and Toll Rail Ltd (who maintain and refurbish rolling stock on ARTA’s behalf) to plan the development of the rail corridor. ARTA contracts the day-to-day running of the region’s train services to Veolia Transport.

Improving Auckland's Rail Network

ARTA and its partners are working to improve the region's train services and passenger rail network coverage. Its main focus is on getting the best out of the existing rail system and train fleet.  This means improving the reliability of train services, introducing more and more frequent services, and providing better stations.

Activities planned over the next 10 years (subject to funding and feedback) include:

  • Double-tracking the Western rail line and redeveloping the Newmarket station to accommodate more frequent services
  • Providing a rail connection to Manukau City Centre
  • Reintroducing passenger services on the Onehunga branch line
  • Extending train services to Kumeu and Helensville
  • Increasing train services to Pukekohe
  • Station upgrades to accommodate longer trains and greater passenger numbers, improved security and information, and to meet disability access standards
  • Providing new and improved stations to serve growing areas such as Manukau, Drury and Parnell
  • Electrification of the rail network
  • Upgrading existing trains and buying new trains
  • Continuing to implement real time information
  • Upgrading signalling.
