Safety

ARTA plays a central role in the coordination of regional road safety through RoadSafe Auckland and rail safety through the regional Rail Safety Group. ARTA also works in partnership with the region's passenger transport operators, NZ Police and local councils to improve the facilities, security and safety of passenger services and roads in the region.

Making roads safe is one of ARTA's primary goals. Its target, set nationally through the Road Safety 2010 Strategy, is to reduce deaths and hospitalisations from today’s level of 921 incidents per year to 670 or fewer.

ARTA’s road safety role is primarily regional coordination, funding, advocacy and education. Land Transport NZ provides the regulatory framework for road safety. Local councils put physical road safety measures in place, and the Police enforce road rules. These organisations are all active members of RoadSafe Auckland.

RoadSafe Auckland

ARTA has convened RoadSafe Auckland to co-ordinate road safety activities in the region. RoadSafe Auckland has had a major role in planning the safety component of the Regional Land Transport Strategy. It operates under a Regional Road Safety Plan that is reviewed annually.

The regional road safety plan proposes a range of strategies to improve road safety by eliminating road deaths and minimising serious injuries through improvements to road design and co-ordinated education and enforcement efforts. Key areas include: speed, drink driving, intersection safety, restraints, pedestrian and cyclist safety, young drivers, and motorway safety.

Recent RoadSafe Auckland activities include:

  • The ‘Young Drivers Get Better With Practice’ secondary schools project
  • The cycle safety campaign 'Hey, We’re All on the Same Road'
  • Support for community-based programmes treating repeat drink drivers with alcohol problems
  • ‘Red Light Camera’ Auckland City pilot project

These activities are an essential component of ARTA’s contribution to an integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable land transport system for Auckland.
