To achieve Auckland's transport goals, ARTA undertakes daily ongoing activities that keep the existing transport system operating from day to day. These activities include the day-to-day planning and funding of public transport, and promoting alternative ways to get around.
ARTA:
- Identifies and buys new public transport services on buses, trains and ferries
- Monitors and reviews existing public transport services
- Does market research, including customer surveys
- Funds concession fares for senior citizens, school children and tertiary students
- Funds the Total Mobility service and other initiatives to help people with disabilities
- Manages contracts and developing services for school buses
- Upgrades the rail system, including buying additional trains
- Upgrades train stations and introduces more bus/train interchanges, and park and rides
- Develops travel plans to encourage more people to catch the train, bus or ferry, walk, cycle, car pool or work from home
- Improves Auckland's environment for cycling and walking
- Promotes and develops the Walking School Bus and School Travel Plan programmes
- Promotes and develops Workplace Travel Plans
- Co-ordinates regional transport safety activities
- Provides information about public transport services (including timetables at bus stops and train stations - visit the MAXX website)
- Coordinates improvements and developments to the local roading network*.
*While ARTA coordinates funding and overall planning for local roads, local councils remain responsible for physical roading improvements. ARTA does not have any responsibilities for the region's motorways and state highways. That is the role of Transit New Zealand.
