Public transport facts

Public transport is becoming more attractive as travel by car gets slower. It will play an increasingly important role in Auckland’s transport system.

Around 52 million trips are made each year by public transport, which is provided by buses, trains and ferries. The region aims to increase this to around 100 million trips by 2016.

MAXX is the regional transport brand for Auckland. Its website provides public transport information for bus, train and ferry services across the Auckland region.

Buses carry the most passengers around the Auckland region. Each week over 43,800 trips are made by buses, totaling over 2.2 million services a year. In 2007, Aucklanders made 42.8 million journeys by bus.

Trains in the Auckland region are carrying record numbers of passengers as a result of more frequent and more reliable services, the introduction of new and refurbished trains and carriages, and the upgrading of lines and stations. The number of trips made annually by train has passed six million for the first time.

Ferries operate on nine routes and are used for around four million trips annually. Patronage is growing steadily, although not as spectacularly as for trains.
