Onehunga Branch Line

The Onehunga branch line is reopening, bringing rail back to Onehunga!

The line was initially opened in 1873 and was in service for 100 years before passenger services ceased in 1973.

Work on new stations along the line began in August 2009. There will be stations initiallty in Onehunga Town, Penrose, Te Papapa and later in Mt Smart.

A new track bed will be constructed, new signalling and power ducts, platforms and access and pedestrian mazes at all level crossings.

Onehunga station will be built at the old ITM site on the corner of Neilson Street and Onehunga mall.

Fast Facts
  • Penrose and Te Papapa Stations will both have platforms 90 metres long by 5 metres wide (single sided).
  • Onehunga Station will have a platform 54 metres long by 5 metres wide (single sided).
  • The capacity of each train for the line will be approximately 132 seated, which equates to around 250 people per two carriage train.  Patronage will be monitored on a regular basis to assess uptake and need.
