The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) has officially launched the new online Sustainable Transport Events Calendar, providing Aucklanders with a one-stop-shop for details on sustainable events throughout the year.
ARTA General Manager, Mark Lambert says “Sustainable transport is a key component of an integrated and effective, multi-modal transport system for a world class city such as Auckland. It helps to reduce congestion, reduce emissions into the atmosphere and active transport modes contribute to the health and well-being of the community.
“There are many worthy and fun events that encourage and support Aucklanders in stepping up to the challenge of travelling sustainably during the course of the year; February was Bike Wise month, one of the highlights of which was 8 Go by Bike breakfasts; March welcomes Travel Wise Week and Walk to Work day while in April the Official 10,000 Steps programme will be promoted. It’s literally non-stop all year round.”
The calendar is an online initiative that charts sustainable events taking place in Auckland and provides key details on how to get involved, as well as where to obtain more information. Following each of the events, updates will be posted and include car usage reduction figures, participation information and competition winners where applicable.
The Sustainable Transport Events Calendar originated out of the successful Travel Wise programme, which helps organisations, schools and tertiary institutions to support their students and employees in making sustainable transport choices. The programme has contributed to removing 7436 cars from Auckland’s congested roads each busy morning peak.
