ARTA’s mission statement is:

To deliver a world-class transport system that makes Auckland an even better place to live, work, and play.

ARTA has developed the following strategies in response to Auckland's transport challenges:

Growing Auckland

The transport system will support regional growth and economic development strategies by linking Auckland's main urban centres with a fast, frequent and reliable Rapid Transit Network, including an electrified rail system and the Northern Busway. ARTA will help develop Auckland's transport system by:

  • Developing strategic routes and regional arterial road networks
  • Ensuring coordination of transport investments and land use planning
  • Improving the institutional arrangements around funding and the delivery of transport solutions in the Auckland region.

    Moving Aucklanders

    One ticket will take you anywhere in Auckland, on a seamless network of bus, train and ferry services. Aucklanders will be able to quickley check the options for their trip before leaving home, and to choose between a quality public transport service, safe walking and cycling routes, and predictable car journey times. ARTA will help to achieve better quality options for travel by:

    • Making best use of the existing transport system
    • Developing and expanding passenger transport infrastructure and services
    • Developing regional cycle networks and pedestrian facilities.

    Sustaining Communities

    Aucklanders will have safe, healthy and sustainable travel choices. People who do not have access to a car will still have access to employment, education, health, commercial and recreational opportunities. ARTA will provide accessible and sustainable transport choices for all Aucklanders by:

    • Implementing Travel Demand Management (TDM) measures including travel behaviour change
    • Establishing a road safety culture
    • Improving the environmental performance of the transport system.


    ARTA's activities

    To achieve Auckland's transport goals, ARTA undertakes three types of activities:

    • Delivering the transport services Aucklanders rely on from day to day
    • Building infrastructure and delivering projects to support a step change in passenger transport use in the Auckland region
    • Long-term planning that helps to prepare for Auckland's future transport needs.
